Things you can do to "Help Save the Bay!!!"
  • Pick up that dog poop! That's right! Pet waste is the source of 15-20% of the bacteria in our natural waterways. 
               
    Did you know that the average dog excretes over 4.5 billion fecal coliform bacteria every day?

 

At that rate, it would only take one year for 50 dogs to contaminate all the water in Irondequoit Bay!!!

Please pick up your dog’s waste in a bag and throw it away in the trash!

 

  •  Purchase phosphorus free lawn fertilizer and household detergents to reduce the amount of unnessary nutrients discharged into our watershed. Nutrients such as phosphorus (and nitrogen) can promote the overgrowth of algae, deplete oxygen in waterways and can kill aquatic life.  Irondequoit Bay has higher than normal levels of phosphorus, which can be easily reduced by decreasing or eliminating phosphorous use at home. Make a difference and be phosphate free (Tell your neighbors too)!

  • Dispose of househould hazardous waste properly. A number of problems can occur when we discard hazardous household waste using common disposal methods. Recommendations for proper disposal will depend on both the particular type of waste and the waste disposal options available in our community.
