During their frequent hikes in the parks, surrounding the Irondequoit Bay wetland area, Harlan and Greg would see bottles, old tires, construction material and other trash that people had left behind. The bay area was beginning to look like a landfill! Although, they would pick up this refuse and dispose of it properly, Harlan and Greg realized that it was a losing battle and that they could not continue to clean up this natural resource by themselves. They needed the help of other nature enthusiasts and citizens interested in making a difference. The idea of creating “Friends of Irondequoit Bay,” dedicated to the protection of one of the most important watersheds in the world was born.
